Death end re;Quest (デス エンド リクエスト) is a role-playing game developed by Compile Heart and Idea Factory. It is the fourth game of their "Galapagos RPG" line of games, being preceded by Fairy Fencer F, Omega Quintet, and Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force.
The game follows Shina Ninomiya, who finds herself trapped in the Virtual Reality MMORPG "World's Odyssey", and Arata Mizunashi, Shina's colleague and lead programmer at Enigma Games.
It was released for the PlayStation 4 in Japan in April 2018 and worldwide in February 2019, for Windows in May 2019, and for Nintendo Switch in April 2021. A sequel, Death end re;Quest 2, was released in the same regions and platforms across 2021 and 2022. A spinoff, Death end re;Quest: Code Z released in japan in September 2024 and May 2025 on PlayStation 4 and 5 in North America. A Steam release is planned but a release date is currently TBD. An actual sequel game, Death end re;Quest 3 is planned with a release date still unknown, although more information will be revealed in autumn 2025.
Gameplay[]
Segments involving Shina feature a mix of RPG gameplay and visual novel presentation that is familiar to Compile Heart games. Players navigate World's Odyssey, occasionally running into enemies on the field. Battles take place in a circular arena, where up to three characters from Shina's party take on enemy creatures known as Martyrs. Players are allowed to freely move around the arena and take up to three battle actions per turn. Depending on the actions that the player takes, the target enemy might be sent flying, where they will receive additional damage by colliding with the field boundaries, other combatants, and "Field Bugs."
The real world segments with Arata do not feature combat and are instead presented as a visual novel. They follow Arata as he searches for clues in Sagami City to help advance Shina's quest to escape World's Odyssey.
Death Ends[]
During the course of gameplay, the player will be presented with choices to make. Depending on the player's choice, or if they die in combat against certain enemies, they will trigger a "Death End". Death Ends usually involve one or multiple of the characters dying in some way, most often being killed by someone else or an enemy. Triggering a Death End can also provide the player with certain accessories for Shina and her party to increase their stats.
Plot[]
Prologue[]
Arata Mizunashi can only watch in horror as Shina Ninomiya is brutally murdered by a massive monster. A part of the monster impales Shina through her stomach, and after letting her bleed out on the ground for a bit, the monster magically lifts up Shina to it, before it bites off her head and throws it.
Shina awakenss in a small house without any of her memories. Shina looks around the house to try and regain her memories but is largely unsuccessful. Shina manages to remember her first name but is unable to remember anything else, while she grows increasingly frustrated she steps outside to see if that will do anything. Seeing the meadow surrounding the house causes her to remember that she is an adventurer journeying to the Mystical Sky Capital, Odyssia. Shina leaves the House of Beginning to set off on her journey. As Shina wanders around the surrounding wilderness, she encounters a merchant named Rook who is being attacked by monsters and steps in to fight them off. Rook thanks Shina, and when Shina asks what happened to the surrounding area Rook explains that one year ago, a terrifying beast known as Heaven's Messenger razed the world, until its body spontaneously shattered. The survivors deemed it a miracle from the heavens, and they went about their lives as normal until the Mass Consternation several months later. Inexplicable events, such as people evaporating and mass suicides, plagued the land thanks to mysterious objects collectively known as the Entoma Scourge. Rook points out that the spider legs on Shina's legs are related to the Entoma. Rook refers to the casualties as martyrs, "suffering for the sake of avoiding retribution". Since they are believed to be possessing monsters, those monsters are called Martyrs.
At Rook's suggestion, Shina journeys to Heartis Palace to enlist as a guard in hopes of making money for her journey. Upon arrival, Shina is freaked out by the lack of reaction from the castle's denizens, and briefly leaves. Gathering her resolve once again, she re-enters and requests an audience with the King of Heartis. When Shina meets the King, he begins speaking wildly and accuses Shina of having killed his wife the Queen, and calls for her head. Shina quickly figures out that the King as well as the guards have been infected with the Entoma Scourge. As the guards move in to kill Shina, she suddenly begins hearing a mysterious voice that guides Shina out of the area. The voice seemingly knowing details about Shina that contradict her few memories. The two have a disagreement over the fate of Shina's mother, that allow the Martyrs to catch up to them. After taking down some of the King's guard, Shina begins to feel very sick, and she throws up a small purple spider shaped object, and it almost immediately eats one of the guards attacking Shina. Shina is led out of the Heartis Palace, where the voice she was hearing earlier introduces himself as Shina's coworker Arata Mizunashi. After Arata explains that she had been missing for over a year, some of Shina's memories of the real world begin flooding in, and she becomes emotional upon realizing her situation.
Arata Mizunashi is a 27-year-old programmer at Enigma Games. He was on a team with Shina developing the Virtual Reality MMORPG World's Odyssey. Shina served as the director for World's Odyssey, or W.O.D as it is also referred to, until her sudden and mysterious disappearance a year ago. At the same time, various bugs emerged inside of the game that proved to be impossible to fix ans as a result, Aggle Inc, who had been providing them the Alice Engine for use in W.O.D, pulled out from the project which caused it to be cancelled. Shina's disappearance has weighted on Arata's mind since, as pointed out by Arata's coworkers Sumika Tokiwa and Lydia Nolan. Tired of being teased, he goes home and looks through his email only to discover an unread message from "World's Odyssey MGMT" with a file attached. Arata at first doesn't open it, believing it to be an attempt to install malware on his system, until he notices that the sender of the email is actually his missing coworker Shina Ninomiya. Arata logs onto World's Odyssey, seeing that the servers have been mysteriously reactivated, and immediately notices Shina inside of the game. Arata begins talking to Shina, which lead into the events at Heartis Palace.
Chapter 1[]
Shina wakes up, having fainted from exhaustion. Arata soon rejoins her, using a model of Enigma Games' mascot Mr. Enigma to take form inside of World's Odyssey. Arata reveals that the game's admin panel has been removed, preventing him from logging Shina out of the game. Shina reveals that she cannot log herself out, either. This leaves the "Ending Engage" routine as the only option to get Shina out of the game, which requires reaching Odyssia. Shina and Arata plot the journey: Shina will attempt to reach Odyssia by way of Sturfil, with an estimated gameplay time of fifty hours. Arata notes that Shina will need to complete all of the neccesary sidequests in order to access the True Ending.
Arata logs out and Shina steps into the castle, only for fear to get the best of her. She exits to find a young woman standing outside of the castle. The woman introduces herself as Lily Hopes; Shina recalls creating a character with that name, but notes she has both a completely different design and a Buggy similar to Shina's. Lily, the Princess of Heartis, tells Shina that she was arrested under suspicion of having killed the Queen. Lily asks Shina to accompany her into the castle, which Shina accepts. Inside the castle, Arata reemerges as Shina and Lily discuss their respective buggies.
Arata decides to investigate Lily's drastically altered appearance, but cannot reach Tokiwa or Lydia. He decides to travel to Engima Games' office directly, but is swarmed by reporters, who all claim that Enigma is behind some sort of mass cyber attack. In that moment, a news report comes on that claims a large amount of people suffered a cyber attack, and that following it their devices were left on the login screen of World's Odyssey. Arata manages to escape from the reporters, and heads back to his house.
While exploring Heartis Castle, Shina comes upon a photograph of Yamabushi Park. After informing Arata of the mysterious object found inside the game, he notes that the picture looks like there is a ghost, so he decides to try and investigate. When he tries looking online for information, he finds no results come up, so he decides to investigate in person. At the park, he meets Hajime Anjo, a fan of the occult and the owner of a nearby cafe. Anjo refers to the information that has suddenly disappeared from the internet as "Truth Fragments". Anjo reveals that the ghost in the "haunted photo" ws just an illusion created by a rock. After Anjo leaves, Arata notices lines of text engraved on the rock. Arata returns home, making the connection between the text and the bugged code in World's Odyssey, and finds that inputting the text from the rock into W.O.D. fixes some of the bugs. Something is then thrown at Arata's window, but it only leaves a spiderweb shaped crack in it.
Chapter 2[]
Shina and Lily encounter a young Beastkin on their way to Sturfil, Shina notices that they look starved and dehydrated and she gives them some bread and water. After they recover, the Beastkin introduces themselves as Al Astra, a 15 year old girl from Sturfil who is aspiring to be an adventurer, and seems to be searching for her missing parents. Al decides to join up with Shina and Lily, and they head to the Sturfil Shipyard where Al's parents once worked. While traversing the shipyard, the group find frog and fish corpses, as well as a newspaper excerpt written in english. Once again, when Arata tries investigating these he finds there isn't any information won the internet, instead getting the information from Anjo and Tokiwa, and the Sagami City Library.
After the crew find and defeat the Entoma Queen, they encounter Rook, who warns the party of a peddler who might try to cause trouble for them. As the crew leave the Shipyard, they encounter a swindler Rook mentioned, as they try to get money out of Al for apparently breaking their contact lens. After an exchange with the peddler who introduces themselves as Clea Glaive The Red Peddler, she agrees to travel with the crew while they repay her for the contact lens.
During this time in the real world, mysterious figures wearing rabbit masks attack Arata and Tokiwa, attempting to capture and or kill the two. They both meet up and hide out at Night Owl, the cafe Anjo runs. The following morning, one of Arata's former colleagues Natsuo Munakata find the two and offer the office for his company as a hideout for the two.
Chapter 3[]
Shina's party heads to the Godot Ruins on their way to the Rizaria Forest. While traversing the ruins, the group is attacked by an Entoma infested mecha, that Clea refers to as "the Corpse", and Clea notes that the Corpse attacking them when they aren't very deep into the ruins is highly unusual. The group panic as the device Clea had been peddling to the group for its ability to counter the Entoma proves to be ineffective, and Shina is heavily injured. The party immediately makes a run for it, and attempt to heal Shina.
During this time, Lydia contacts Arata at last, explaining that she is on the run from individuals wearing rabbit masks who had been following her. Arata promptly goes out to rescue Lydia, finding her at a street with an injured ankle. As Arata runs back towards Summer Life, he is almost hit by a car, but mysteriously manages to avoid being hit. He recalls hearing Lydia say something strange before suddenly appearing on the other side of the street on Lydia's lap. On his way back to Summer Life with Lydia, he is confronted by two detectives who ask him to go to the police station for some questioning. Arata agrees to go, and sends Lydia on her way.
Arata is taken to the police station to be questioned about his alleged involvement with the recent cyber attack. He is questioned by Detective Senji Hizumi, but Arata does not provide any answers. The CEO of Enigma Games, Werner Glock, hacks into Hizumi's phone to give Arata instructions to follow in order to escape the station, instructing him to count to 30 and when the lights go out to simply walk out of the station and head back to Summer Life. When Arata arrives back at Summer Life, he finds Rin Asukaze, the CEO's secretary present, who provides him design documents for W.O.D. he had previously tried to obtain. Arata's party have a small celebration, while Arata informs Lydia and Rin of the events that have transpired up to that point.
Back in World's Odyssey, Shina awakens, and everyone expresses their relief over seeing Shina survive the encounter. Clea walks off away from the group, and Shina follows her, and the two have a talk about the incident where Shina reveals to Clea her plans to go to Odyssia. After returning to the group, Clea decides to stick with the party long term, and accompany them on their journey to Odyssia.
Chapter 4[]
The party arrives at the Rizaria Forest at last, hoping to use the Terminal located inside the forest to get to Odyssia. Shina notes that to get into the nearby elf village where the Terminal is located, they need an "Elf's Guidance", and shortly afterwards they encounter Lucil Filarete, an exiled half elf half human girl. After the party locates her missing Elf's Guidance, they all head to the village only to find the village people being slaughtered by a mysterious woman who calls herself "Ripuka of the Ludens". The party attempt to confront Ripuka, but she reveals that she already destroyed the Terminal in the village before summoning an Entoma Queen and fleeing the scene.
After the party defeats the Entoma Queen, they fall into some sort of hole, and are unable to contact Arata while inside it.
The party travels to Rizaria Forest in order to warp to Odyssia, meeting exiled half-Elf Lucil Filarete along the way. However, they arrive at the Elf Village to see the elves being slaughtered by a mysterious woman. The woman, calling herself Ripuka of the "Ludens", effortlessly holds off the party. She reveals that she has destroyed the Rizaria Forest terminal, and summons an Entoma Queen before leaving. After the Entoma Queen is defeated, the party falls into a mysterious hole.
Meanwhile, Arata is kidnapped by the rabbit masks and tortured for the whereabouts of the mysterious e-mail. He is rescued by Rin Asukaze, but the experience drives Arata to push the rest of Enigma Games away.
Chapter 5[]
The party encounters Celica Clayton, the Monarch Adventurer. She agrees to join their quest to reach Odyssia. However, one of the Terminal Stones located within the Sanatheus Temple are cracked, forcing the party to find a replacement.
Meanwhile, Arata and the rest of Enigma have been branded criminals, forcing them to reunite at Summer Life.
Chapter 6[]
The party falls into the Strain Area, meeting three more Ludens: Alice, Nova, and Levin. Alice knows Arata's real identity, which alarms him, but notes that Alice does not appear overtly hostile. The Ludens offer to let Shina's party use their resources, which makes Lucil furious as she believes the Ludens to have been complicit in Ripuka killing the elves. Tensions only rise further when Nova informs the party that the Heartis Palace is under attack. Lucil storms off through one of the doors, which conveniently leads the party directly to the Heartis Palace.
Lucil remains furious with Lily but, to Lucil's ever-increasing frustration, Lily does not reciprocate even an ounce of anger. Lily reaches the throne room to find her beloved Chief Knight Gilsura dying. With his death, Lily flies into a rage while glitching out. Her buggy suddenly begins talking, gloating about how it fed on her anger and suppressed it until it was ready to explode. The party is forced to subdue Lily; after a tough fight, the glitched Lily suddenly begins talking about her struggles with medical school and her abusive stepmother. After Lily is returned to normal, she furiously attacks her buggy to reclaim her ability to feel anger.
Outside of World's Odyssey, Arata investigates a murder scene and find a mysterious masked figure that leaves more code for W.O.D.
Chapter 7[]
The party returns to Rizaria Forest to retrieve one of the Terminal's stones. The group ends up coming across a graveyard, and one of the remaining elves explains that the graves are for Beastkin that were once hunted for sport by humans. It is revealed that Al's parents were among the hunted, being taken from their homes forcefully, with Al being hidden from the hunters. Al had seemingly blocked out all memory of this incident, and begins to glitch out similarly to how Lily had previously. After Al is subdued, she regains her ability to feel sadness and apologizes to Shina and the group for attacking them.
Meanwhile, Enigma are devising a plan to inflltrate Aggle Inc, who had been revealed to been behind the mysterious disappearances of several individuals including Shina. They send in Munakata to do the infiltrating and seem to be rather successful, until all of a sudden the video feed is cut off as Munakata is discovered.
Later on, Arata goes to investigate the case of a boy who had a public incident claiming to be a man who was a victim of the Salem Witch Trials. Arata goes to the home of the boy, only to discover the body of the boy's sister with code written on her body, and the masked figure from before. The masked figure is quickly revealed to by Lydia, she quickly flees the scene and doesn't return to Summer Life.
Chapter 8[]
The party returns to the Godot Ruins, where they encounter Ripuka once again. Ripuka taunts Lucil before claiming that Lucil was actually happy to see the elves who bullied her die. After Ripuka leaves, Lucil admits that there was some truth to Ripuka's words and begins laughing maniacally. Lucil glitches out, forcing the party to subdue her. As with Al and Lily, Lucil begins to remember things about her life outside of World's Odyssey, and reclaims her ability to feel joy.
In Arata's world, it is revealed that Werner Glock, Arata's boss, wrote some of the AI code that would later be repurposed for the Alice Engine. Aphesis kidnapped thousands of people to create a computer network capable of creating a true artificial intelligence - a Luden. The first Luden created was Iris, who would eventually rebel. The other Ludens locked Aphesis out of World's Odyssey.
Chapter 9[]
The party heads to Landor Volcano Cave to find the final terminal stone and the Infernal Wyrm that ate it. Shina mentions how the Infernal Wyrn likes to eat Lava Mushrooms, and the group begins to gather them to lure it out. Once the Wyrm is lured out to the party, they fight it and retrieve the final Terminal Stone.
Outside of World's Odyssey, Rin is kidnapped and tortured by Aphesis and its leader Victor Tailman.
Chapter 10[]
The party heads back to the Sanaetheus Temple to replace the broken Terminal Stones. This time, Terminal activates, and the group reaches Odyssia at last.
At that moment, Aphesis breaks into Summer Life. Victor brings out Munakata, who he claims was tortured into giving up the location where Enigma were hiding. Suddenly, everyone's phones begin to make noise, a voice speaksthe phrase "Hello World" repeatedly, and this is shown to be happening to everyone in Sagami City. The sudden occurrence distracts the Aphesis members, giving Arata and Tokiwa the opportunity to escape and take back Arata's laptop with W.O.D still runnning on it. When they walk outside, they see Martyrs in the streets, devouring people left and right. As they try to run away, Arata encounters Alice and the rest of the Ludens while waiting for Tokiwa outside a building while she uses the bathroom. Alice reveals to Arata that their goal the whole time was to merge the real world with World's Odyssey, and destroy the two worlds in the process. Alice points out Lydia who is standing nearby, and Arata immediately runs to her.
Arata meets up with Lydia, and tries to ask her some questions. He asks about what happened when he was about to be run over, when he heard Lydia say a strange phrase and him suddenly ending up on Lydia's lap. When Arata repeats the phrase he heard Lydia speak in that moment, Lydia reveals that she is an "Observer", someone who corrects the irregularities within Arata's world. She says the phrase he spoke is actually a spell to freeze time, and says that she has failed in her mission by directly intervening in that moment. Lydia passes an ancient tome and a pen to Arata, explaining that the tome contains a magical language, with the pen being able to manifest things depending on what is written using it. Once Lydia ascends to the heavens, Arata opens up his laptop to check on Shina, and finds himself unable to control the Enigma avatar and all of Shina's crew dead.
Shina explains that in the moments following Aphesis showing up at Summer Life, Celica had turned against the crew. Celica explains that she had actually reached Odyssia before once, but when she found nothing but monsters she became convinced that Odyssia and W.O.D. as a whole was a fake, and sought to find the "true" Odyssia. Victor called out to Celica in that moment claiming to be God, explaining that W.O.D. could become real if she brought him Shina. Most of the crew easily fall to Celica, except Clea. Clea remarks that the reason she never felt like any of her emotions were missing was because the emotion that was stolen wasn't one she experienced a lot, and thus never glitched out or lost control like Celica and the others since, for her, she would never get to that point where everything starts boiling over and she loses control. She says that the emotion stolen by her Buggy was courage, and voluntarily glitches herself out to take down Celica.
Back in the present, Rook approaches Shina, offering her a weapon that would help her in defeating Heaven's Messenger. Arata almost instantly realizes that this is a trap, and it is revealed that Victor had taken control of Rook. HE proudly boasts about how he buffed up Heaven's Messenger to be virtually unkillable, and that Shina was destined to fail.
The Ludens arrive on the scene shortly after, allowing Shina and Arata to get away while the Ludens deal with Victor.
Chapter 11[]
Arata and Tokiwa reach Aggle's headquarters, which is in disarray due to the current ongoing Martyr invasion. They encounter Munakata carrying RIn out on his shoulders, and gives Arata words of encouragement. Arata goes down into Aggle's headquarters down into their hidden labratory, and finds a supercomputer linked up to 10,000 people who were all in tubes. The "Aphesis Guru" talks to Arata through the computer, and reveals everything about Shina and IRIS. It's said that IRIS is the first Luden, and Shina had bonded to it. It's revealed that the real Shina had been killed six months ago for attempting to escape the facility, and the Shina Arata had been talking to up to that point was effectively a clone of her created by IRIS. Shina's death is what created the Entoma Scourge, with IRIS having completely lost control and causing massive destruction. The Aphesis Guru tries to convince Arata to help them, but instead he tries to escape. He is guided out of the facility by a mysterious voice in his head, and when he returns to the surface he finds the corpses of Rin, Munakata, and Tokiwa, who had been killed by Martyrs.
Arata almost completely gives into despair, resigning himself to death as he tries to get some of the Martyrs to eat him. However, before a group of them can eat him, Arata is rescued by a group of 5 girls who refer to him as "Enigma". Arata quickly realizes that these are the real world counterparts to Lily, Al, Clea, Lucil, and Celica, and that they had all been saved when Shina activated the Ending Engage. Since W.O.D. and the real world had merged, Arata decides to travel to the Strain Area to confront the Ludens and get them to help undo the merge. When the Ludens refuse to help Arata, he tries to manifest IRIS using the file he had been emailed by Shina, which destroys the Strain Area.
Arata's crew and the Ludens appear back at Yamabushi Park. The Ludens learn of what Iris' true feelings and intentions were, and decide to finally help the party out by recreating Shina's physical body, and sending her with the others up to Odyssia to stop Iris.
Shina's party climb up through Odyssia, before being stopped by Ripuka yet again. She acknowledges that Iris' will contradicts her urge and desire to kill, but she still tries to kill the party in spite of that. The party are unable to stop her at first, as Ripuka goes on about the God of Death and admonishing them for acting as if they are uninvolved, before destroying the game's camera and causing the scene to go dark. At first, Arata is confused by this statement as the Ludens had led Arata to believe he was the God of Death, but he quickly realizes the truth as she faces the camera and directly asks the player for their assistance. If the player decides to help, the party are re-energized and are able to defeat Ripuka. Ripuka tries to kill one of Shina's party with a sneak attack by throwing her sword, but they quickly realize what's happening and move out of the way, which causes Ripuka to be impaled with her own sword.
The party at last reaches Iris. They fight Iris as she becomes increasingly more bugged and glitched. For a moment, she appears in her normal Luden form, before disappearing. Back with the Ludens, Arata is presented with a tome that they say can be used to "degrade" reality and return the physical world to the state it was in prior to the creation of the Alice Engine and World's Odyssey. The Ludens mention how Arata has already tried to degrade the world numerous times, ending with failure each time. With each failure, Arata leaves behind the "Truth Fragments" and the "Reality Objects" to subtly guide himself towards the correct outcome. The Ludens mention that he will be the only one that will retain memories of their adventure following the degrade, with everyone else completely losing all recollection of the events that transpired.
Arata notes that all of the party members spent time with Iris at some point (likely referring to End Quest) before embarking on this journey with Shina. They return to the House of Beginning, with Shina noting that this was the house that she and Iris had built together. As everyone prepares for Arata to degrade the world, he thanks the God of Death and suggests that maybe they should be called the King of Resurrection instead.
One of seven (eight with the Ripuka character DLC) character endings then play, showing Arata interacting with one of the party members or thinking about Lydia.
Shina's ending is considered as the True Ending. Time is rewound back to when Shina is initially brought on to work on World's Odyssey. When Shina meets Arata, she seemingly is able to recall who he is. The rest of the world is revealed to still be merged with W.O.D, but things are noticeably a lot better. While Martyrs exist, they are said to be not nearly as dangerous as before, and are treated more like stray dogs rather than vicious monsters. All the locations from W.O.D. still exist, and Shina's party are able to change from their real world selves to their W.O.D. avatars at will.
