The God of Death, known as the King of Death (死の王) in the original Japanese version, and dubbed "King of Resurrection" by Arata Mizunashi, is a recurring title used in the Death end re;Quest series. The God of Death is said to be the only being who can alter fate and defy death. The God of Death is most likely the player themselves, with multiple characters referencing the "God of Death" while talking directly to the player.

History[]

Death end re;Quest[]

"God of Death" is a title first used by Alice of the Ludens. Seemingly referring to Arata Mizunashi. Alice describes the God of Death as a being that can defy fate, unlike the Ludens which are merely "fate's conduits".

During the final battle against Ripuka, she screams for the God of Death and creates a distortion. She curses the God of Death for pretending as if they are not involved in the battle against her, which confuses Arata and Shina. She angrily smashes the camera with her sword, which causes the scene to go black.

Arata has an epiphany, recalling all of the strange phenomena that surrounded him during his journey to rescue Shina, as well as his struggle to grapple with the thought of potentially living in a "fake" reality similar to that of World's Odyssey. Realizing that this "God of Death" is actually someone that is watching over him, he turns to the camera and directly asks the player for their help. The player agrees, powering up Shina's party and allowing them to battle Ripuka on even terms. The option to lend a hand only appears if the player has completed at least 40 of the quests, if the player has not completed the necessary quests the game defaults to the Normal Ending.

After defeating Ripuka and subduing Iris, Arata thanks the God of Death for their assistance, and states that he believes that "King of Resurrection" would be a more fitting and less creepy title. Arata also said that the God of Death might be from the same world that Lydia Nolan is from.

Death end re;Quest 1.5[]

Arata mentions that he was once referred to as the God of Death for his ability to repeatedly rewind time, a title that he claims that he doesn't mind so long as it will allow him to rescue his friends.

Death end re;Quest 2[]

In the Fallen ending, Marbas, after having fully possessed Mai Toyama, calls herself the "God of Death". She then breaks the fourth wall to chastise the player for trying to find all of the Death Ends, before using her power to drain the player of their energy.

Death end re;Quest: Code Z[]

When visiting the Japanese or English websites, the site presents the age-verification question "Are you the God of Death, who is over 18 years old?", again suggesting that the player is the God of Death. The God of Death is mentioned in several character descriptions.

Sayaka Hiwatari like Ripuka before her, is fully aware of the player and addresses them directly throughout the game. Unlike Ripuka, who was actively hostile towards the player, Sayaka acts friendly towards the player.
